Computer games (all forms of digital games) are today a significant cultural form where inclusion is increasingly important. Legislation in the USA requires e.g. in-game chat (text, voice, video) to be accessible for people with disabilities, as they are viewed as ‘Advanced Communication Systems’.
Accessibility means better design for all gamers and an increased target group for developers as approx. 20% of the world population has some form of disabilities.
Participatory design (or codesign) together with gamers with disabilities is a requirement for high credibility within research and development, but may be hard within both academia and game companies due to lack of an established platform for communication where all these stakeholders may meet and share knowledge. The PowerUp project aims to create such a platform.
